Sexual and Gender Minority Health
Local sexual and gender minorities (SGM)—including, but not limited to, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex people—can face stark health inequities.
Recent reports from the Hawaii Department of Health found disparities between SGM and non-SGM communities, related to health risk behaviors (e.g., smoking, substance use); health and well-being issues (e.g., current health conditions, consumption of fruits and vegetables); and mental health challenges (e.g., feeling sad or hopeless, self-harm), among others.
These reports also highlighted resiliency and strength within these communities through connections and resources, some of which are listed below.
